THE UK HAS MORE FOODBANKS THAN BRANCHES OF MCDONALDS

theukhasmorefoodbanksthanbranchesofmcdonalds.com is Matthew Herbert's first solo album project since The Horse in 2023, a record made with a horse skeleton. For three decades, Matthew Herbert has made music from the physical world - from the life of a pig, to a bomb exploding in Libya. In 2010 there were only around 35 food banks in the UK but following the austerity policies of the Conservative and coalition governments, there are now in excess of 2,800 - more than there are branches of McDonald's. In 2023 food banks distributed over three million parcels. The sounds on this album come from the most requested items at food banks in the UK: tins, packets, bottles, cartons, soap, nappies, rice, shampoo. The title is also a URL. Sonically the album is related to Matthew’s earlier projects under the monikers of Wishmountain and Radio Boy, it is experimental dancefloor music designed to energise and destabilise at the same time. Album out late summer 2026. The debut live show is in Paris as a special guest of Oneohtrix Point Never and the North American premiere is at Mutek festival in Montreal in August.
